Roberto C. Granato, MD wrote to me directly in April 2008:

I am still in practice in New York at the same address.

A reader with first-hand experience writes in August 2006:

I was a patient of Dr Harry Benjamin and his associate Dr Charles Ihlenfeld and was referred to Dr. R. Granato at his office in Elmhurst, Queens, NY for my surgery in the spring of 1973. A date for surgery was later confirmed once a hospital was found willing to give approval, something very difficult to acquire in those days.

My surgery was done by Dr. Granato in Swedish Hospital, on Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn, NY on Sept. 19, 1973. That was a full two years before the date listed on your site.

Dr Granato had a very difficult time then getting a hospital to accept patients for srs. I was one of his first and had to accept less than appropriate hospital standards. In fact the hospital was a dump.

Another reader with first-hand experience writes in February 2005. Corrections to this letter in red below were supplied by the elder Dr. Granato in April 2008.

There are two Dr. Granatos. They are father and son.

The father, Roberto C. Granato, Sr., MD, is the famous one, who operated on Renee Richards, and about 800 others between about 1975 and 1985.

Roberto E. Granato, MD. is the elder's son. The story, unverified, is that his father trained him to perform vaginoplasties and phalloplasties, but the younger has performed only a few of the procedures.

Granato the elder is believed to have retired from performing genital reconstruction surgery and has possibly retired altogether. The elder Granato also wrote an excellent vaginoplasty article in 1974*. He was the first Toby Meltzer like practitioner in the United States, but that was a quarter century ago!
