Transgender fringe flare-ups: “PurpleGirl” and “Cloudy”/”Sillyolme”

Article by Andrea James

Political progress in the mainstream trans community has occasional distracting flare-ups involving bizarre fringe groups. They often try to criticize the community or assert their authenticity as True Transsexuals™ while remaining anonymous. When their veil of anonymity is lifted, they are invariably shown to have been brainwashed in some manner. It’s always due to belief in some cult-like ideology about how they are different from or better than other trans people. I have also discussed wannabe movements previously: wannabe disabled, wannabe intersex, wannabe autistic, wannabe transsexual, etc. After a lull, the fringe groups have recently become active again.

I have just published a new piece on major participants from two especially bizarre fringe movements: the “Harry Benjamin syndrome” movement and the transkids.us hoax.

PurpleGirl, aka Courtney Michelle Holder, who self-identifies as black and having “Harry Benjamin Syndrome.”

Cloudy, aka Sillyolme, aka Candice Brown Elliott, who self-identifies as a “homosexual transsexual.”

Both have been causing a lot of problems online under assumed names. Now that the transkids.us hoax site has gone back online after being gone for about a year, I felt it was time to publish this information and analysis.

More than ever, we need to ignore the divisiveness caused by these pitiable anonymous critics. They lack the courage of their convictions and cause a lot of long-term damage and distraction. If anyone refuses to be open and honest about their identities, don’t waste your time listening to them and responding to them, whether you agree with them or not. They will invariably turn out to be exaggerating or lying when making fallacious arguments from authority based on their self-described transitions.

Don’t believe those who are too cowardly to identify themselves. They are probably giving you misinformation or just getting off on causing trouble, as we have seen time and time again.

Among future people I’ll profile: a bizarre scientist wannabe who is African-American (for real, not a race wannabe like PurpleGirl), as well as a “furry” (an interspecies wannabe) also involved in the “transkids” hoax. The first one did time for a serious crime. Stay tuned for more on delusional kooks and high weirdness from the fringes of the trans movement.

Part of me wants to mention here that furries aren’t all interspecies wannabes, but at the same time the person sure does deserve and earful for the transkids hoax.

If you’re interested in a no-bull assessment of furries, don’t hesitate to give me a buzz.  I’ve been involved in furry for about 6 years now and have seen its full spectrum of benefits and creep-out elements.

Other than that, I have a motto regarding anonymous posting: “If you’re not willing to put your name behind your convictions, they are not convictions.”

’Furry’ is a broad subculture, I’ve met many of them and had bad and more recently good experiences with them… There’s all kinds of different identities within it, not necessarily “interspecies wannabes”, not necessarily sexual fetishists.

Anyway, this is the first I’ve heard of these “true transexual” people… I’m not sure I have my head around it but it’s quite shocking and I’m interested to hear more.

I used to think it was just unfortunate how the bbld ilk used some sad trans people to feign the legitimancy of their views and community support. But I’ve come to believe it’s really just a strategy to deligitimize all reasonable trans community voices. They get to both reinforce their etiology narative and the message that all trans folks are looney. The implication of their using the folks they have as their AstroTurf, is that none of us need be listened to on our own lives. A neat, but evil trick.

Interesting stuff. Particularly weird with PurpleGirl’s skin darkening…

One point though: trans people advocating separatism or distance from gay/lesbian/queer community aren’t all fringe people. Viviane Namaste writes quite cogent arguments for this (including the long history of gay and lesbian people actively organizing against trans people) in her books Sex Change Social Change and Invisible Lives: The Erasure of Transsexual and Transgendered People. And after the ENDA debacle, I think there’s definitely something to be said for trans people creating our own spaces and activisms outside the LGBT umbrella.

That said, I am a queer trans woman who loves the queer community.

I guess I’m part of that Lost Trans Generation..  And I’m sorry to see that Andrea has such a prejudiced view of people from this time.  But, like usual, it’s the loud and obnoxious people that seem to represent every generation stereotyping us all so I don’t blame her.

I have no nostalgia for the “oppressive system”.  Why would I?  Do I wish things would have been easier?  Of course.  Who wouldn’t?  I didn’t need a doctor to tell me what me and my parents already knew.  But such was life during those times and I did what I had to.  There are still hoops, unfortunately, that people need to jump through today as well.  Mostly financial, but no less daunting really.  But yearning for the good ol’ days?  I don’t think so.  I don’t understand someone that would.  What was so good about them?  Transitioning was difficult and the stupid standards we were being held up to were ridiculous.  I’m glad to see them slowly disappearing.

I’m sorry to hear that some people from my Generation believe that there is such a thing as “wrong” people.  Sounds like those people who are saying this are still caught up in the past and never really left their transition behind if they are still this judgmental.  Everyone should have a shot at their bliss.  Who is anyone to judge?  I believe many people did get turned away that needed help and it hurt me as much then as it does now to know that these really lovely people didn’t get the help they needed.

I never felt the competition or superiority Andrea speaks of.  Why would anyone see themselves as ‘greater than’ anyone else is beyond me unless the ultimate goal was to never leave the transsexual community which, if I remember, wasn’t exactly smiled upon.

I did go stealth as most did.  The world is still quite cruel and there is something freeing about just getting on with one’s life than to be stuck in a state of gender transition or having to constantly defend ones femininity (or masculinity) to those that would seek to take it from them.  Though I think the whole transgender movement seems to be a natural progression stemming from transsexualism and hopefully future generations will benefit from it.  I guess I’m not a normal LTG in that I’m not threatened by the transgender community or the future.

I get the feeling that Andrea is pretty angry though with people from my Generation.  Why get angry at an ineffectual movement of people who don’t seem to understand the era they are in?  Please don’t stereotype us all Andrea.  I know that isn’t your intent but you are obviously upset.  As one of the “usually” silent masses, we’re not all angry nut cases bent on fighting transgender people.  I really like your site and much of what you have to say.  You have a very informative site.  And I know your site has helped thousands.  I would have given anything for a site like yours back in the day.  I hope you’ll keep doing the great work you are doing bringing understanding and freedom to the future.

A not angry LTG woman.

I’m sorry if this sounds a little mean, but I think I may have found a fatal flaw in “cloudy“‘s argument, on the transkids site, under the 2 types of MtF FAQ it states that “They will only transition if they can pull it off successfully to the extent that no one would suspect that they were born male, because their aim is to become better adjusted in society.”, if she honestly believes this then how can she see herself as a “true” transexual, when she evidently passes no better than some of us “fake” transexuals who transition to fulfil our “fetish”.
