Trans film news: Paulista, Prodigal Sons

Trans depictions in the media continue to improve. Trans actress Maria Clara Spinelli is on the festival circuit right now with Paulista. It premiered earlier this year in Palm Springs and just played the Hollywood Brazilian Film Festival. About her character:

She is simply a woman who wants to be loved. “That’s what makes the character so fascinating,” Spinelli said, with the help of a translator. “She is a paradox. The fact is that she’s a transsexual, but she’s the most conservative one in the film. People assume that she would be the flamboyant, overly sexual one, and it is not so. “The fact that she is a transsexual is just one part of her. She is so much more than that.”

Saw this on Saturday night with the short “The Abused” at the Egyptian. Both were very well done. The Abused I think due to it’s format was much more intense, while Paulista was allowed to unfold over time. The people are wonderful and fairly realistic (in Paulista). You could find these people in almost any large city. Spoiler: I was saddened by the ending for everyone. On the other hand it is an accurate portrayal of what happens to those who love outside of the proscribed social norms.

I wish it wasn’t.
