ARLINGTON, Va. (April 23, 2009) — A historic look at the American Psychiatric Association’s role in breaking barriers for gay people and a discussion of the role and place of gender identity disorders in the next DSM will be among several sessions at the APA Annual Meeting that address lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues.The APA Annual Meeting will be May 16-21 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
The Northern California Psychiatric Society is sponsoring a panel discussion that will look at APA’s role in breaking barriers and affecting social change. Presenters include Alfred Freedman, M.D., APA president when homosexuality was removed from the DSM; Carol Nadelson, M.D., APA’s first woman president; Larry Hartmann, M.D., APA’s first openly gay president; and Melvin Sabshin, M.D., medical director of APA from 1974 to 1997. The discussion is scheduled Monday, May 18, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 304 at the Moscone Center.
Diagnostic issues specific to gender identity disorder and its inclusion in the upcoming fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V) will be featured in a session titled “In or Out? Discussion About Gender Identity Diagnoses and the DSM,” on Monday, May 18, from 2 to 5 p.m.
Other sessions will address mental health issues among LGBT youth and among older adults. Annual meeting sessions (at the Moscone Center unless otherwise noted) on LGBT issues include:
