Diagnosis vs. Treatment: The Horns of a False Dilemma

Kelley Winters notes:

The transgender community has been divided by fear that we must suffer degradation and stigma from the current GID diagnosis or forfeit access to lifesaving medical transition procedures. But have we been impaled on the horns of a false dilemma?  The current GID diagnosis and its doctrine of “disordered” gender identity have failed transpeople on both issues of harmful psychosexual stigma and barriers to medical care access. The DSM-V is an opportunity for new diagnostic nomenclature based on scientific standards of distress and impairment rather than intolerance of social role nonconformity and difference from assigned birth sex.
