Aubrey’s poem inspired by “My Secret Self” |
|
Aubrey notes:
I recently watched the 20/20 episode “My Secret Self” and was truly touched by your daughter’s story because out of the three children, she was the only one who faced the bullying/social issues which I myself have experienced/experiencing. Though I am not a “trans”, my own struggles were for other reasons. I am a young writer (16) and was inspired to write the following poem after watching the program and was so glad to find a way to share it with you. I feel that everyone has a right to be who they are on the outside as to who they are on the inside.
On the Outside by Aubrey N. Buchanan
for RileyIf only life was as simple as a thought,
one wish and you’re who you are.
You can be whatever you want to be,
and be the perfect person, underneath.Trapped in what you wish was not yours,
what can you do?
Reach out for loved ones.
Make them understand.
You are more then what you seem,
and better then you can be.The world can be cruel,
but only if you make it cruel.
Do not listen to what they think,
you are who you are.
And that’s who you’ll always be.No matter who you are,
you’ll always know.
Know who exactly is on the inside,
and who is thinking,
‘This is who I am
...on the outside’.
