New TV series seeks trans people planning a wedding

Ian Parton, a producer at Electric Sky in the UK, notes:

Hello - I am developing a TV series for The Learning Channel in the US (and Channel 4 in the UK) following couples – one of whom is trans – who are getting married.

The series would offer a portrait of the day to day challenges the couple experiences, the perception of their forthcoming marriage by the outside world and it would tell their life stories. The arrangements of the wedding and the big day itself would offer a nice framework around which to tell these stories. Ultimately the series is celebratory as, well, marriages are a time of celebration.

Weddings are particularly interesting I feel because they are a time to assemble all the people who have been supportive through the transition and also statements to the world – here we are, take us or leave us.  We will also examine the legal contradictions around this area.

If anyone in the US or UK is getting married and would like to discuss the programme further I would love to hear from you at

ian.parton@electricsky.com

I appreciate the transgender community often are, quite rightfully, suspicious of their representation in the media but I believe this series would have a positive effect.

We aim to work closely with Trans Media Watch ( http://www.transmediawatch.org/ ) to get its tone just right and ensure it is handled intelligently and sensitively.

Many thanks,
Ian Parton – Electric Sky

Transgender & applying to college? See how schools rank for inclusivity

A reader notes that the Campus Climate Index has been helpful in deciding what school to attend while transitioning:

On this site, it ranks colleges and universities on their level of friendliness/inclusion/accommodations to both sexual orientation as well as gender identity. It also does a good job at breaking it down into different aspects of the colleges, has many sorting features, displays average tuition costs, and more. I believe that many others could benefit from knowing of this site.

Also another good site, that while not having been updated recently, has useful information, is HRC’s Resource page for Transgender-Inclusive Benefits @ Colleges and Universities.

Please let me know of anyone who may be willing to share their story.

Feel free to pass along my contact information. I can be reached at this email address or 212-259-1523.
