Bailey on reading lists
During my 15 June 2003 radio interview on KPFT with Vanessa and Beth*, I mentioned
that Bailey was already being included in institutional reading materials. This
page will monitor that activity.

Lists the Man Who Would Be Queen under "gender identity."
Many transsexual women consider this the most defamatory book written in
24 years.
For details, please see:

We ask that you remove it from a list of books designed to instill transgender
pride.

In June 2003, the Education Administration section of the University of Wisconsin
website carried the following in their diversity section:
transgender/Transsexual Reading Resources Compiled by Lynne Evarts (levarts@aol.com)
http://labweb.education.wisc.edu/edad735/instructor_materials/sexual_orientation/Booklist_transgender.doc
(word document: requires reader)
I have contacted the author and will report any responses. Below is my letter:
Dear Ms. Evarts:
I saw your materials on the U. of Wisconsin website at:

This list includes The Man Who Would Be Queen by J. Michael
Bailey. Please be aware that many transsexuals consider this the most defamatory
book on transsexualism written in 24 years, and should not be included in
any list purporting to be inclusive or trans-friendly. For more on this,
please visit:
http://www.tsroadmap.com/info/bailey-blanchard-lawrence.html
Or contact me via email. We are very interested in seeing this book removed
from your reading list.
Thank you!
Lynn Evarts' response on 20 June 2003:
Please inform everyone who is innundating me with e-mail that the list is
going to be removed as soon as humanly possible. I have spoken with the professor
in charge of the page, and she said she is taking care of it. Please give
us some time to allow the wheels of technology to turn before you continue
to bombard me with e-mail. I have written to several of your members, thanking
them for their opinions, and I have indicated that the website is going to
be amended. Please pass the word around that it is being taken care of as
fast as a university can take care of anything.
Thank you.
Lynn Evarts
